Let there be no doubt that depression is a serious mental illness that requires months and sometimes years of treatment on the path to a cure.

Millions of Americans across the United States are affected by depression each and every year. Only about a third of them will seek treatment, and that makes it worse. Depression has always been classified as a mental affliction. Therefore, many Americans choose not to be placed into that category. Instead of being considered mentally ill, people try to manage the problem themselves. Depression is more common- place than you might think and it will not go away on its own.

What are the causes for depression?
The answer can get very complicated because you have to take many factors into consideration. Depression can be a long story because of many issues. Here are a few of the parts of depression. A chemical imbalance is widely considered to be the main cause for depression. This may be the case, but what causes that imbalance? The causes can be genetic, mental or even come from the environment. In many cases the underlying cause is never identified. Many become depressed when they are diagnosed with a very serious medical condition. This is especially the case if the diagnosis presents the possibility of death or impairment.

The loss of a loved one or treasured possession can have a tremendous impact resulting in depression.

Long periods of emotional, sexual or other physical abuses can result in depression. Substance abuse, either drug or alcohol, can also cause depression. People's mental states are fragile. If exposed to the wrong pressures, depression can result. In many cases depression is passed on genetically. Those afflicted have a family history of the disease . Many prescription drugs can cause depression. Studies and tests show a casual relation between many high blood pressure medications and depression.

One of the major causes of depression is stress.
In our lives many events and elements can cause stress. It's not well known, but it's true, that stress can result from the pressures associated with positive events such as a new, high paying job. The unknown is often the root cause of this stress, whether it be positive or negative. Arguments with family members, disputes with business clients can both cause stress. Just trying to make ends meet is stressful for some people. Knowing is half the battle. Seek medical help if you or a loved one suffer from depression.
